Fred Weston, editor of the 'In Defence of Marxism', talking at the ULU Marxist Summer School on 'What will Socialism look like?'

The University of London Union Marxist Society kicked off its programme of discussion meetings for the term with an excellent first talk on the topic "Why Marx was right." Invited speaker Alan Woods introduced the topic, the audio of which is included in this article. The ULU Marxists thought that this would be a good first introductory meeting of the new academic year, particularly for those new to the society, considering the recent headlines and articles making their way into the bourgeois media of late along the lines of "Marx was right!". However, whilst many mainstream economists are willing to condede that Marx may have had a point on the economy, of course he was proven wrong about socialism! These points made for a lively first debate of the ULU Marxists as it entered its fourth year of activity. This report includes audio from the first discussion meeting.

Fourier explained that "social progress is measured by the progress of the woman towards freedom". Later, Marx and Engels analysed the development of human society in detail, not only from the economic viewpoint but also culturally and in the relationship between the sexes.
