Continuing their assault against the most vulnerable in society, the homeless look to be the next group in the government’s firing line. Government cuts to charity funding will mean that a fifth of the hostels and homeless shelters currently available will have to close, depriving these people of the support they rely on to live. So much for the “Big Society”.

The magnificent 500,000-strong demonstration on 26 March – the biggest trade union demonstration in the history of the British labour movement – was a marvellous response to the Coalition’s austerity measures. It sends out a clear message: the workers of this country are not prepared to take the government’s austerity measures lying down.

Militant Student supporters visited the picket lines at Tower Hamlets college this morning and spoke to the striking UCU (University and College Lecturers Union) lecturers about the issues concerning their action over pay and pensions, and the wider concerns for students, lecturers and the future of the education system under the knife of the Tories "era of austerity".

University fees going up and EMA being cut leaves young adults in a tough position. While Prince William’s wedding is set to cost the economy up to £5 billion in lost working time, Britain is in debt by over £4 trillion. We re-publish this article here with permission from the CARBOLIC magazine editorial board.

As a socialist, Labour has been my party of choice for nearly a year now. I felt at home in the party that could list Tony Benn and Clement Atlee as great names of its past. Indeed, when the Lib-Dems committed their despicable betrayal of students - their key voter-base - Labour seemed the natural option for a socialist seriously interested in fighting the Tories.

Last week the Institute of Directors, an organisation of business leaders established in 1903, called for 24 attacks on the rights of working people. Ranging from an end to collective bargaining within the public sector, the end of flexible work and training patterns, reduced capital gains tax, increased investment allowances and an end to green belt restrictions all the way through to a £500 deposit to take an employer to tribunal.

Recent developments at the University of Glasgow have cut across the relative lull that set upon the student movement following the mass demonstrations of late 2010. Student activists occupying an old post-graduate and mature student social club on the one hand, and the announcement of a raft of cuts on the other, have provided combustible material that has seen the movement reach a new plain and wider layers than it previously had.

Militant Student supports the candidacy of Adam Booth for Cambridge University Student Union (CUSU) President. Adam is the chair of the Cambridge Uni Marxist society, and a regular contributor to the Militant Student. He was at the forefront of the student movement in Cambridge last year, playing an important role in the university occupation. Standing on a basic platform of opposition to all cuts and student fees, and for a fighting student union, we are serialising Adam's manifesto. This article details his with his position on graduates and the NUS (National Union of Students).

The Tories' cuts to service will disproportionately affect society's most vulnerable people. This will exacerbate the previous crisis in care for the elderly, raising the prospect of increased pressure on families, especially working-class ones, to care for their elderly loved ones because capitalism can't afford to pay for it.

Young people at the moment are being hammered by the Tory government. Increases in tuition fees will either condemn students to decades of crippling repayments, or, more likely, put working class school students off applying to higher education altogether.

2011 will be remembered as the year ordinary people the world over defied the "script" and showed that society can and will be changed by mass struggle. The millions in the Middle East, hundreds of thousands in Wisconsin and the militant British students have already written history. This is the light in which we must see Aaron Porter’s recent announcement that he will not stand for National Union of Students (NUS) Presidency this year, the first time an incumbent has not stood for a second term since 1969.

If David Cameron could decide, the 10th November 2010 would likely be forever remembered as the day that the Tory Party HQ was “vandalised” by “a tiny minority of violent protestors”. Unfortunately for Cameron, he does not write history. As it is, for many, that day will be remembered for the 50,000 strong demonstration that marked the first mass action against the coalition government.
